Thyroid gland – Importance

Thyroid gland is an endocrine gland which is a small butterfly shaped situated at the base of your neck. It is a very vital gland and has a huge influence on your health. Thyroid gland is responsible for producing hormones which regulates body’s metabolic rate, brain development, digestive system, heart rate, body temperature and bone maintenance. It is essential for all the cells in the body to function properly.

Thyroid gland produces two major hormones that are secreted into the blood: Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine. If there is an excess of secretion of these hormones from the gland, the body cells work faster than normal which is referred to as Hyperthyroidism.
