Swine Flu Burden in Capital

The rapid spread of Swine Flu (H1N1) across the country has raised a serious alarm. And one the most affected states according to the recorded cases is our own city, Delhi. Within the last month, 1, 066 cases of H1N1 influenza have been recorded in the capital. The total number of cases by the end of second week of August reached 1, 307 which is more than 6 times the cases recorded in the same month previous year. The situation clearly is getting out of hand.

Thankfully, the city has sufficient means to deal with the pandemic and has managed to bring down the number of deaths significantly. 4 patients have died in Delhi affected by the influenza, 2 of which belonged to outside the city.

Health experts suggest not worrying as it is just like normal flu with same symptoms and line of treatment. The high risk group includes heart patients, senior citizens, diabetic patients, pregnant women, and children. There’s a list of precautions to be followed which can help keep the flu at bay. The matter is being looked after by senior officials of the health department as the outbreak of Swine Flu at this time of the year is quite surprising. The risk period is generally after monsoons but has arrived early this year.

The sudden rise in the number of cases calls for the citizens to be vigilant individually and learn about the symptoms and prevention. Any symptoms seen should be treated as early as possible to avoid reaching the severe stage. Patients should stay at home (in severe cases, get admitted to a hospital) to avoid further spread of the disease in the society. It’s not only time to keep yourself safe, but be a good citizen and promote the well being of the society around you as well.
