Since humankind has acquired erect two legged posture from the ancient quadruped position, the low back has remained weak due to structural and biomechanical insufficiency. Majority of people having lower back pain have radiating pain in their leg at some point. Pain at posterior side of leg radiating from back could be due to compression of sciatic nerve. This condition is known as sciatica. This nerve compression can be due to following reasons.
Herniated Disk
Our vertebral columns have cartilage in between with a gel like core at the centre of cartilage. Due to unequal distribution of weight as in case of lifting heavy weights, this cartilage can break and gel like substance make leak into spinal for a men.
This leads to vertebral disk collapse and impinges the nerve coming out of the vertebral canal. It is most common between 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae which causes radiation to posterior side of lower limb
Weak muscles
Our vertebral column is held in place by a number of muscles and they are also responsible for proper movements at back level. If these muscles become weak due to sedentary lifestyle or prolonged immobility, they might not carry out their functions properly.
So, it is important to stretch and strengthen them with proper exercise and stretching, as recommended by your orthopaedic doctor or physiotherapist.
Bad posture
With a correct posture, force dissipated in weight bearing joints like vertebrae is equal and hence body can perform maximally. But a bad posture can disturb the normal bio mechanics and can cause pain in weight bearing joints like vertebrae as well as hip and knee joint.

Some people develop bad posture since childhood which leads to abnormal development of curvature of back that may cause back pain at a very young age.
Spinal deformities
Spinal deformities can be congenital or can be acquired with time. People who carry heavy bags on one shoulder or wear high heels develop such deformities. Sitting with slouch posture for too long can also cause such deformities. Increase or decrease in lumbar curvature or side deviation of vertebral column are most common spinal deformities.
Identifying the correct cause of the problem is half of it solved. Orthopaedic doctors achieve the expertise with years of practice in the area. Dr. Suresh Bansal, our in-house Ortho specialist is one of the rare gems, holding specialization in Sciatica treatment with an experience of more than three decades.
