Tennis elbow is an overuse injury of forearm muscles which causes pain in the lateral side of the elbow which is also the origin of many muscles of the forearm. It is commonly seen in household workers and housewives. In initial stages, it may not bother much but if left untreated it can be very painful and difficult to manage. It can be treated in a certain extent in following ways:
Rest
Wherever there is injury due to over use, rest is must during acute exacerbation. Try not to work with affected arm and rest it on a pillow while sitting or lying. Avoid doing activities like wringing clothes and other strenuous activities.
Ice pack
Applying ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes can reduce pain and inflammation. Regular icing can be done to relieve pain. If pain persists, consult your doctor as they will prescribe you some pain medication.
Splint
Tennis elbow splint is a type of band which is worn an inch below the joint. It assists your forearm muscles and reduce load on your muscles. Splints can be affective where certain activities are unavoidable.
Strengthening
When your tennis elbow becomes non painful, it is necessary to strengthen the forearm muscles so that your muscles are not injured easily. It will help you to endure during activity without having pain.
Tennis elbow, if treated early with few lifestyle changes will always have better outcome. Such pain should not be ignored. You should consult a doctor or a physiotherapist so that it can be treated effectively.
