Diastasis recti in pregnant women

Diastasis Recti in Pregnant Women

Diastasis recti is the separation of abdominal muscle as a result of weakness of abdominal muscle. It can occur in both pregnant and non pregnant women due to many reasons. It can cause problem and may not appear pleasing to women. Some of the causes are listed below

Hormonal effects

Hormones released during pregnancy can lead to relaxation on muscle thus leading to separation of muscle from the centre. It can also occur during labour due to excessive breath holding that causes increased pressure in abdomen.

Poor abdominal tone

Women who exercise regularly and have good abdominal muscle strength usually don’t have diastasis recti. Sedentary lifestyle and weak core muscles before pregnancy can contribute to this condition.  Multiple pregnancies also make muscles weak and cause tearing of abdomen.

Ageing

Diastasis can also be found in middle aged to older women with low abdomen strength. In such cases, diastasis can lead to hernia and may require surgical intervention.  Routine assessment of abdominal strength and some amount of exercise is highly recommended for women who fall in this category.

Diastasis recti is a treatable condition and also preventable to certain limit. Regular abdominal strengthening and proper care can help avoid this condition. To know more, book an appointment with our specialist gynaecologist at Bansal Global Hospital.
