Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever | Sign and Causes

Dengue is a mosquito-borne infection that usually occurs in tropical areas. The symptoms of mild dengue are high fever, headache, skin rash, muscle, and joint pain. A serious form of dengue fever is known as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), which can cause hemorrhage (bleeding), organ failure, circulatory collapse (shock), and in extreme cases death. But, with early diagnosis and treatment in the initial stages, the mortality rate of dengue fever is lesser than 1 out of 100 patients.

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) has fatal complications with symptoms similar to dengue infection in the early stage, but after a few days, the condition of the patient starts to get acute. The patient becomes impatient, ill-tempered, and sweaty. The sickness starts with a sudden increase in temperature along with facial flush and other influenza-like symptoms. The fever generally lasts for 2 to 7 days and most people recover within a week if it is mild dengue fever. But, if the symptoms get worse and become severe, it can get life-threatening. The blood vessel gets impaired, leaky and the platelets in your bloodstream drop. This leads to a severe form of dengue fever, i.e. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF).

The symptoms of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever or Severe Dengue are as similar as mild dengue along with the below-mentioned symptoms:

  • Severe and continuous abdominal pain
  • Bleeding from nose, mouth, and gums
  • Bruises on skin
  • Persistent vomiting with or without blood
  • Blood in stool and urine or black stools
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Restlessness
  • Cold or sweaty skin (shock)
  • Dry mouth – excessive thirst
