Dehydration – Causes, symptoms and treatment

What is dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when your body is not getting enough water it needs. With not having enough liquids, your body can’t function properly. You can have mild, moderate and severe dehydration depending upon how much water is lacking in your body.

What causes dehydration?

Normally body lose water through sweating, breathing, saliva, peeing, etc. The lost fluids are then recovered through drinking liquids such as water, juices, eating food containing water. When you lose more water than you take in, it can cause dehydration. So, dehydration occurs because: you are not drinking enough water. Other than that, diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, excessive sweating and increased urination can cause dehydration. The signs of dehydration vary by age.

For infant or young child

  1. Dry mouth and tongue
  2. No tears when crying
  3. Urinating less
  4. Sunken soft spot on the top of the head
  5. Sunken eyes and cheeks

For adults:

  1. Dark yellow urine
  2. Dizziness
  3. Fatigue
  4. Extreme thirst
  5. Less frequent urination

What are mild to moderate symptoms of dehydration?

  1. Fatigue
  2. Dry mouth
  3. Less urinating
  4. Constipation
  5. Headache
  6. Less, or no water when crying
  7. Excessive thirst
  8. Lightheaded
  9. Dark yellow pee

In addition to above mentioned symptoms, severe dehydration signs are:

  1. Not peeing or very dark yellow pee
  2. Dizziness
  3. Sunken eyes
  4. Fainting
  5. Sleepiness, lack of energy
  6. Extremely dry skin

Severe dehydration is a medical emergency.  Get immediate medical help in case you are experiencing severe dehydration.

How you can treat dehydration?

The only way to treat dehydration is to make up for the lost fluids in the body. The best approach to treat dehydration depends on the severity and its cause.

For babies and young kids who became dehydrated because of fever, diarrhea, vomiting, use oral rehydration solution (ORS). These solutions have salt and water in specific proportion to replace the missing liquids and electrolytes in the body. For adults: If you have mild to moderate symptoms of dehydration, rehydrate yourself with water and juices.
