Newborn Jaundice for phototherapy

Jaundice is a very common condition in newborn babies. As much as 60% of timely born babies and 80% of premature babies develop Jaundice in the initial days of their life, ranging from second to sixth day of birth. While many of them can heal by themselves, judging the severity of the Jaundice is important. Phototherapy is done in nurseries to eliminate bilirubin in the blood, which eventually helps in getting the baby jaundice free as early as possible.

Difficulty in Breathing

Babies who are born with meconium aspiration develop breathing difficulties. About 5-10% of babies born in India go through this. These babies need to be kept in nurseries for extra care. Oxygen and ventilation is provided in the nursery to make normalise their breathing before they can face the raw environment.

Delayed Crying

If your baby doesn’t cry after 30seconds of being born, it can be a sign of distress. If the baby doesn’t breathe and cry immediately, they might need professional care in the nursery where proper equipments are available to handle the situation.

Premature Babies

As per govt. records, 3.7 million out of 27 million babies born in India in a particular year were born premature. The ratio doesn’t seem to get better. And as the name suggest, the baby is still premature and needs an environment similar to his/her mother’s body, which can only be provided in a well equipped nursery.

Low body weight

If your baby’s weight is less than 1.8 kg at birth, it will need proper nursery care to gain some nutrients for its healthy survival. Even though the problem doesn’t seem to be that much serious, it can create complications in the near future of the baby’s health. So, it’s always recommended to keep your baby under nursery care until they gain proper body weight.
