Constant Ringing in the ear and treatment of tinnitus

Tinnitus: What constant Ringing in The Ear Mean

Tinnitus is when you experience constant ringing in one or both ears. You might hear buzzing, hissing, clicking, roaring or humming sensations in the ear with no external source. These sounds can be constant or steady. Almost everyone experiences such symptoms after being exposed to extreme loud noise.

It is a common problem among older adults. It can be due to age-related hearing loss, an ear injury or problem with the circulatory system. For most people the symptoms are resolved by treating the underlying condition and at times medications help reduce the signs.

What is the treatment for Tinnitus?

Your doctor can diagnose Tinnitus through your symptoms alone. But to treat its symptoms it needs to be ensured that Tinnitus is not a cause for any other underlying disease. The doctor will run some tests like Hearing exam and Imaging tests. They will check your eye, jaw, neck, arms and legs movements and look at your medical history.  Drugs cannot cure Tinnitus but, in some cases, medication can reduce the severe symptoms.

Treatment for Tinnitus depends upon whether it is caused by any other health condition. And if so, the doctor can treat it by treating the underlying cause. For example:

Earwax removal, treating a blood vessel condition, through hearing aids or changing your medication if the medication is the cause of Tinnitus.

In most cases, Tinnitus can’t be cured, doctor may suggest you some devices to help you with the symptoms such as White noise machines or masking devices and prescribe you medication to help you with severe symptoms.

When to see a doctor?

Tinnitus may stay at all times or it may come and go. Noises of tinnitus can vary in pitch; it can be low that some are not bothered by it or so loud that it disrupts your ability to concentrate.
