Mammography in Breast Cancer Prevention

Role of Mammography in Breast Cancer Prevention

What is Mammography?

Mammography is basically taking an x-ray of the breast which is done to ensure that there are no unusual lumps or other growth in the breasts. Even though it can be done for various reasons, one of the most common is to detect early-stage cancer.

Also, the procedure involves less radiation than a typical x-ray and create a detailed image of the breast(s).

So, how does it help in Breast Cancer Prevention or Treatment? Let’s see:

  • A mammogram can detect cancer around 1-2 years before any symptoms or lumps are felt physically.
  • Early detection makes it more probable for the patient to get rid of the cancer before it spreads.
  • It leads to decreased Cancer Mortality (Breast Cancer).

Even though it usually isn’t suggested to go for mammograms, it is recommended for women with 50+ years of age to consult their gynecologists and get informed about the right interval at which these should be done.

Also, if you have a family history of breast cancer or have other reasons to believe that you are more prone to the disease, share the concern with your Gynecologist. They will suggest you are mammography and other tests depending on your current situation. This is valid for women with 35+ years of age.
