What is Amniotic Fluid?
Amniotic fluid is the fluid, often called as water, which surrounds the foetus within the amnion. The fluid is 98% water and the baby swims in it during the entire course of the pregnancy.
What is its importance?
The amniotic fluid is important for both the mother and the baby in the following ways:
- It acts as a cushion for the growing foetus, i.e., protects it from outside blows on the mother’s abdomen.
- It helps the foetus to move within the uterus of the mother.
- The fluid also facilitates the exchange of nutrients between the mother and the foetus.
- It gives space for the foetus’s lungs to develop so that they perform normally when born.
Even though the importance of amniotic fluid is clear, in some instances it can also be the cause of worry. In cases when the amniotic fluid is more or less than necessary, there can be problems in the pregnancy.
