Nipah virus

Nipah Virus : 5 Myths & Related Facts

With the outbreak of Nipah Virus in certain regions of India, there had been widespread panic amongst people around the country. And along with, there is a flood of news and information being spread through social media and internet. But is it all true? Probably not.

Not everything you read on the internet is true and depending on unreliable data can be lethal when it comes to health related matters.

Our experts at Bansal Global Hospital came together and jotted down the list of facts and myths that you need to know about Nipah Virus. Check them out:

Myth1: Nipah Virus can be transmitted only through date palm sap as was the case during earlier outbreak in India and neighbouring countries.

Fact: The last outbreak saw a great number of cases due to infected date palm sap but it needn’t be true for every time. It can be transmitted through any fruits infected by the host animal. So, to be sure, it is best to avoid fruits from tall trees and the ones fallen on ground.

Myth2: Only fruit bats are capable of transmitting the disease.

Fact: Other animals infected by this virus can also become a cause of transmission of this virus. After bats, pigs are known to be the worst infectors of Nipah virus.

Myth3: Nipah virus doesn’t transmit from human to human.

Fact:  Animal to human transmission is usually seen but human to human transmission is also possible hence proper care must be maintained while caring for the patient. Anyone who isn’t responsible for care taking should maintain a considerable distance.

Myth4. A certain homeopathy medicine can cure and prevent Nipah Virus.

Fact: Recently a message circulated in social media circles that a certain homeopathy can save you from Nipah virus. Moreover it was being said that it can cure you as well. That’s not true. There is no identified treatment for the infection. You should only trust reliable medical professionals for consultation and caretaking.

Myth5. It’s a onetime outbreak.

Fact: Nipah virus outbreaks have been recorded earlier as well, with ongoing deforestation and shortage of habitats for animals such as bats these outbreaks may become frequent in future. So, even if the outbreak is under control for now, we need to do lifestyle changes to minimize the effect of these epidemics.

The moral of the story is to be more vigilant and smart. Social media spreads things quickly and many a times the shared details aren’t even true. So, before you believe in any of the information related to your health, you should always consult your doctor and confirm the same.
