Management of Fracture in Osteoporosis

Healing of fractures is very time consuming, it is even more difficult to treat a pathological fracture as in osteoporosis. Bone formation is reduced which cause bone thinning. It is not only responsible for fracture but also delays bone union. But certain lifestyle changes can help to avoid as well as manage fractures. Some of them are listed below.

Diet

Diet should be a major concern when it comes to the treatment of a fractured bone. Diet should be rich in calcium, minerals, and proteins to help heal and build bone structures.

Fat and sugars should be avoided in osteoporosis as increased body weight can increase pressure on weight-bearing bones.

Exercise

Exercise helps in accumulation of calcium on the bone surface. Weight-bearing exercise causes microfractures of the bone for which our body’s mechanism repairs it by accumulating more calcium to that area.

These microfractures don’t cause any harm but activate osteoblasts that form bones. If there is a fracture other body parts should be exercised regularly to avoid further thinning of bones.

Positioning

The fractured part should be positioned appropriately to allow the union of bone fragments. Your Orthopaedic Doctor may put your affected limb in a plaster cast or recommend surgery.

Make sure to follow their advice and avoid undue pressure in that area.

Osteoporosis shouldn’t be taken lightly and regular visits to a specialist orthopedic doctor should be made. Bansal Global Hospital provides specialized services to all osteoporosis and bone patients. To book an appointment, please contact the helpdesk.
