Fracture Care: Tips to heal better with a plaster cast

Plaster Casts are the best way to heal broken bones when they are not severely damaged. Most orthopaedists suggest immediate plaster and advice keep it for 21days to sometimes a couple of months, depending on the severity of the accident.

Keeping it for so many days can be a challenge but to keep it and take care of it is important for the healing of the bones. To help you during those days, here are some tips to follow sincerely:

Move the exposed areas: It is advised that the exposed areas near the plaster should be moved regularly or they get jammed can cause trouble when the cast if off. For example, if you have a wrist bone fracture, make sure you move your fingers and shoulders as suggested by the orthopaedist.

Don’t let moisture get in: Keep your cast clean and dry. Moisture can rot the plaster and cause infections.

Don’t put in lotions and other cosmetics without consulting your Doctor: Lotions and cosmetic products might not react well with the closed surroundings within a plaster. It can lead to infections or can damage the plaster. So, avoid using anything without consulting your orthopaedist.

Don’t alter your cast: If you think cutting an inch from either way won’t harm, it most probably will. The doctor knows it best and hence any alterations should be left out to them only.

Do as advised: Every fracture is different and doctors do advise all necessary precautions at the time of the plaster. Pay heed to them and follow it sincerely.

If any problem arises or you can experience some unexplained pain or mold formation in the plaster, consult your doctor at the earliest.
