Scoliosis

What Is Scoliosis And What Are The Symptoms

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that most commonly affects teenagers. It can develop in adults who have cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, although the reason of most childhood scoliosis is unknown.
It is usually moderate, but certain curvature increases as children grow older. It is a debilitating condition. The amount of room in the chest can be reduced by a particularly severe spinal curve, making it difficult for the lungs to function correctly.
Mild scoliosis patients are regularly followed, generally with X-rays, to see if the curve is worsening. In many circumstances, there is no need for treatment. To prevent the curve from deepening, some children will need to wear a brace.f

SCOLIOSIS CAN CAUSE THE FOLLOWING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Shoulders that are misaligned
  • Uneven waist
  • One shoulder blade looks to be more prominent than the other
  • One hip is a little higher than the other.
  • The rib cage protruding forward on one side.
  • When leaning forward, there is a prominence on one side of the back.
  • In most cases of scoliosis, the spine twists or rotates in addition to curving side to side. As a result, the ribs or muscles on one side of the body protrude further than those on the other.

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A DOCTOR?

If your child shows signs of scoliosis, see your doctor. Mild curves can occur gradually and normally do not cause pain, so you or your child may not be aware of them. Teachers, friends, and teammates in sports are sometimes the first to discover a child’s scoliosis.
