Why is Osteoporosis more Common in Women than Men?

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the depletion of bone mass causing the bones to become prone to fractures. It has become very common in past decade due to sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise. According to statistics, 70% of all osteoporosis cases are of women.

Every 2nd women of the age 50 is likely to have osteoporosis while the ratio is half in men. Reduced bone mineral density is more common in women due to following reason.

Estrogen

Estrogen hormone is produced by ovaries in female. It is responsible for maintaining bone health as it metabolises calcium. By the time women reach menopause, production of estrogen is diminished which reduces bone density.

Therefore, women tend to lose bone mass at a faster rate after 50 years of age. Reduced estrogen is also possible in women who get their ovaries removed and are at risk of developing osteoporosis at younger age than men.

Faster ageing

Ageing process is naturally faster in women than in men. Menopause is one of the causes of faster ageing in females but it is not the only reason. One of the reason is muscle mass. Muscles produce stress to the bone and helps in calcium deposition in bones. Males have more muscle than females and muscle atrophy due to ageing in slower in males. Females tend to lose muscles faster and calcium deposition due to muscle stress is not very efficient in females.

Genetics

Women have genetically thinner bones than men. Men and women of same age group with comparable height and weight, if studied for bone mass, men will have more bone density than females. Before puberty bone mass in both male and female grow at same rate but after puberty males tend to have higher growth in bone mass than females..

Under-diagnosed in men

Osteoporosis is more suspected in females than in males. It is the reason why men often go undiagnosed of osteoporosis and therefore, there are less reported cases of osteoporosis in men. Osteoporosis is usually asymptomatic and is often diagnosed after a fragility fracture.

Given the probability of oeteoporosis recorded in women, it is recommended that every woman above the age of 45-50 must go for regular bone check-ups and bone densitometry tests. If detected early, the treatment can be much more effective than at a later stage.
