How can you Examine Yourself for Breast Swelling Symptoms?

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers detected in women across the globe. And unfortunately, India is among the leading countries in prevalence of breast cancer. Every year around 50 thousand women die due to breast cancer in India. Statistics show that India needs to fuel its breast cancer awareness program as cancer cases are increasing with every passing year. Keeping in view the increasing cases of breast cancer it is important that women learn to examine themselves for any possible symptoms which might be cured effectively on early detection. Here are a few tips on how you can self examine yourself for breast swelling:

VISUAL EXAMINATION

Examining yourself in front of the mirror is the first step towards self examination. Look for any kind of asymmetry, colour changed, swollen or lumpy part. The breast size of dominant side is slightly larger and can be ignored. Make sure to check your underarms also as lymph vessels of breasts are also located in armpits. Scars or rashes that reoccur or do not completely heal should not be ignored and should be bought to the notice of your gynaecologist.

PALPATION

Touch your breast with hands to detect any superficial lumps, swelling or any kind of unevenness. Then palpate your breast with firm hands to check deeper structures and look for lumps and swelling. Check if there is any kind of pain or burning sensation due to applying pressure which may further demand investigation. Squeeze your nipples and notice if there is any pus, blood or abnormal discharge which is a red flag for breast related pathology. Visit your gynaecologist for any doubts and for clinical check up.

CLINICAL EXAMINATION

Clinical breast examination by an expert is important for early detection and treatment of breast cancer. It is necessary to see your gynaecologist as there may be some pathology only recognised by expert hands. Even if not frequently, you are recommended to see a specialist at least once or twice in a year for regular check up.

Don’t shy up while going through the steps of self examination. It’s your own body and you need to take care of it. Apart from self examination, every woman especially above 40 years of age should see her gynaecologist regularly and seek immediate medical help if she finds out any lump, abnormal texture, or colour on or around her breast area. Early detection helps in better treatment and prognosis of breast cancer.
