Gender Determination in Humans

X or Y chromosome

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. And this goes out to the many people in India who believe that since the mother is giving birth to a child, it is she influences the gender of the child to be born. But to the utter dismay of these people, it is not so.

As one of the best maternity hospitals in Delhi, we suppose it to be our responsibility to share the correct information further. So, we talked to our Best Gynaecologist in Delhi and here’s what she has to share regarding the gender determination in humans:

So, females have 2 X chromosomes while males have 1 X and 1 Y chromosome. How these chromosomes fuse determines the sex of the child. So, it is apparent that female having both X chromosome gives one X chromosome and it depends on the male whether X or Y chromosome is fused with that of the mother.

As a result:

When X fuses with X, a girl child is born and when X fuses with Y, a boy baby is born.

This is not only for the purpose of information but BGH holds it to its social responsibility to share the information because, in certain families in India, violence is still common because apparently, a mother couldn’t give birth to a specific gender child.

Also, it is a punishable offence under Indian law to determine the sex of the child before it is born. Bansal Global Hospital doesn’t take part in any such activity.
